About the project
The number of tourists visiting Iceland has increased dramatically in recent years, and ISAVIA has placed strong emphasis on digital infrastructure to serve this growing group. KEF Airport is a community hub for everyone working and doing business at the airport — aviation professionals, staff, and customers of restaurants, shops, and more.
Hugsmiðjan developed a web solution that provides centralized information about flights, parking services, shopping, and transportation to and from the airport.
Robust digital services lay the foundation for a smoother airport experience, enhance the feeling of security, and help prevent queues and other delays. The goal is to simplify access to information, ensuring that travelers can move through their journey with ease.
Discovery with design thinking
From a design perspective, we approached the project with a user-centered mindset, focusing on a clear, accessible, and modern experience for users of the KEF Airport website. The project centered on simplifying the site structure and ensuring the website meets the needs of diverse target groups — in particular travelers, staff, and others who rely on airport services.
Drawing inspiration from best practices at other international airports, we shaped the design to offer smart solutions, intuitive navigation, and a visually engaging layout that effortlessly guides users to the information they need.
Technical approach
Our focus was on ensuring that the new KEF Airport website is both powerful and flexible in operation. We emphasized clear information architecture, fast content delivery, and scalability to meet the diverse needs of users.
We also prioritized better data utilization by exploring ways to collect and analyze usage data effectively. The technical design of the site was shaped to be future-oriented and secure, with a strong focus on efficiency and ease of maintenance.
