About the project
The Icelandic Cancer Society serves many roles, making its information sharing particularly complex. There was a need for a new digital solution that would merge four older websites into one, while accommodating the organization’s diverse activities—including education, prevention, fundraising, and awareness campaigns.
The focus was on creating a warm and welcoming interface that makes it easy for users to find the information they need—while also highlighting ways to support the important work of the Cancer Society.
Objectives
The Cancer Society emphasizes cancer prevention through education. The website serves as a hub for factual information, offering tips, articles, and guidelines on healthy living and early detection from professionals in the field. With all the misinformation going around this hub of truth is increasingly important.
The new website creates ways for the public to contribute to cancer research efforts, creating a transparent channel for fundraising, both for research and essential services.
The society provides services for cancer patients and their families, including counseling, support groups, events and financial assistance. The website makes it easier to access information about available services.
Fundraising
The Pink Ribbon unites us in the fight against cancer and is one of Iceland's largest annual marketing campaigns. The new website offers a special focus on the Pink Ribbon campaign. It allows the application of the pink theme color throughout the site during the campaign, conveying messages of hope and solidarity. A user-friendly layout supports marketing and educational content, with a call-to-action for donations.
The web solution effectively aligns with the campaign theming the whole site pink for the duration of the campaign, from an engaging countdown at the start to participant appreciation afterward.

The collaboration between the Icelandic Cancer Society and Hugsmiðjan spans over a decade. The new web solution was an extensive and rewarding project, where all of the Society’s web platforms were unified into one flexible solution. Together with the excellent team at the Cancer Society, all content and site structure were reviewed—with the aim of meeting the needs of key user groups and strengthening solidarity in the fight against cancer.
The solution encompasses every aspect of the Society’s important work—from education, research, and personal stories to donation options and the major annual awareness campaigns, The Pink Ribbon and Moustache March. A warm and user-friendly framework paired with a powerful web solution!

Trust, Professionalism, Care and Respect
Based on the values of the Icelandic Cancer Society and new branding from TVIST, we emphasized a warm interface and strong user experience throughout the design. Special attention was given to how ongoing campaigns influence the website—allowing their theme colors and other visual elements to be reflected across the entire site or within specific sections.

Technical approach
The web solution encompasses the Cancer Society's service, research, education, and prevention work and fundraising. A significant focus is placed on all components including analysis, design, programming, activation, API connections, and search functionality. A new CMS system (Payload) along with a customized interface and functionality tailored to the society’s needs.
A balancing act between readability and precision.
All educational content from the older websites was reviewed during the migration to the new solution. We created content templates for all main categories—for example, basic texts about different types of cancer. The focus was on improving scannability while ensuring that no important information was lost during shortening or reorganization.
By using tags, various options were enabled to automatically compile related content, regardless of its placement in the site structure.
Information, education, and accessibility always top-notch
In my collaboration with Hugsmiðjan, I’ve always felt like part of a team that shares a true passion for ensuring the digital presence of the Icelandic Cancer Society—and the information, education, and accessibility it provides—are consistently top-notch. That feeling stands out when I reflect on our communication and projects over the past years.
